The most important thing to do before removing a Mac hard disc partition is to back it up. If you don’t already have a system in place, Time Machine is the simplest way to back up your data. To begin a local backup routine, you’ll need an external hard disc.

Method #1. Using Disk Utility

Before we begin, it is critical to recognise that removing a partition will delete its contents. Making a backup of your Mac’s data is the best way to ensure you don’t lose any images or documents.

  1. Navigate to Disk Utility in Launchpad.
  2. On the left sidebar, select the partition you want to delete.
  3. In the pie chart, make sure the partition you want to delete is chosen. Select the minus (-) sign. The pie chart will be updated to reflect your intention to delete the specified partition.
  4. Click the Apply button.
  5. A popup window with the statement “This partition will be removed” will appear. Click Partition to confirm, and then let your Mac do its thing.
  6. Click the Done button.

Method #2. Using Terminal to delete the Mac partition on Mac

  1. Go to Launchpad Terminal.
  2. Enter the command “diskutil list” to display your HDD or SSD’s partitions and volumes.
  3. Enter the command “diskutil eraseVolume jhfs+ drive /dev/disk0s3”, with the correct identifier in place of “disk0s3” to delete the partition. So, you may need to use “disk0s2”, for instance.
  4.  Your terminal will display a progress bar. When you see “Finished erase on disk0s3” (or whatever disk you erased), you’re almost done.
  5. To see if you’ve erased the partition, run “diskutil list” again. Examine the name; if your partition’s name has been reset, you’ve succeeded. You must now combine the deleted partition with your primary partition.
  6. Disk Utility should now show the partition. To reclaim disc space, select and delete it as described in “How to Delete a Partition on Mac Using Disk Utility.”

Method #3. Erase a Mac partition

  1. Navigate to Disk Utility in Launchpad.
  2. On the left sidebar, select the partition you want to delete. We’ve chosen the partition iGeeksBlog. Delete a partition.
  3. On the top toolbar, select Erase.
  4. Check that you’ve selected the correct partition by reviewing the name and, if necessary, updating it. Select Erase.
  5. You’re finished as soon as you click Done! The partition remains empty on your Mac, free of any previously stored data.

Method #4. Delete Boot Camp partition

To free up the space that Windows 10 occupies, use Boot Camp Assistant to erase its partition. Fortunately, Mac makes this step extremely simple:

  1. Boot Camp Assistant Launchpad
  2. Click Restore, then enter your password before clicking OK.
